Styrofoam sangat populer untuk membungkus makanan. Ini karena styrofam mampu mempertahankan suhu panas-dingin makanan, anti bocor, ringan, tidak mahal, dan praktis. Usai dipakai bisa langsung dibuang. Namun, riset terkini membuktikan bahwa styrofoam mengandung residu berbahaya bagi kesehatan. Residu bisa berpindah dari styrofoam ke makanan dan bersifat karsinogenik yang dapat menyebabkan gangguan system endokrin dan reproduksi pada manusia.

Residu pada styrofoam (benzen, carsinogen, dan styrene) bisa menimbulkan anemia, kerusakan sum-sum tulang belakang, dan mengurangi produksi sel darah merah hingga meningkatkan resiko kanker. Residu ini akan terlepas saat styrofoam bersentuhan dengan panas, lemak, atau minyak pada makanan.
